The attention of management of Akwa United has been drawn to numerous comments, text messages and calls regarding the unfortunate 0-3 loss of Akwa United to Enugu Rangers in Uyo last Sunday.
Reacting to the incident, chairman of the club Elder Paul Bassey appreciates the fall out of concern by numerous friends and supporters of the club, describing the result as “unfortunate, not in the character of our great club.
“Those who were in the stadium that fateful Sunday can bear testimony to the fact that the result did not do justice to the balance of play, especially in the first half when we squandered begging chances.
“We hereby tender an unreserved apology to the government and people of Akwa Ibom State, our fans and supporters worldwide for the embarrassing loss”.
According to Elder Bassey, the defeat to Rangers was unexpected and unacceptable. He noted that before the loss to Rangers, that Akwa United were undefeated at home in 31 matches, (Akwa United club’s record and one of the longest unbeaten home record in the NPFL).
He expressed displeasure over the manner in which Akwa United lost in front of the home fans and sincerely apologized on behalf of the team.
” We all know that there are three results in football; win, draw or lose, on Sunday we got a result we didn’t want. As a team that wants to defend her title, such result was not good enough, but at the same time, it goes to show how the NPFL has developed over the years. Teams have been getting results on the road. As a team, we have won two and drew three away games so far this season but that is not an excuse for us to be dropping points at home.
“In the last six years, the brand Akwa United has become a force to reckon with in the NPFL and on behalf of everyone at Akwa United, we want to appeal to the government of Akwa Ibom state, all our fans and supporters to bear with us while giving us all the necessary support and encouragement that will motivate us to do more.
” We want to assure everyone that we will make the most out of the remaining 20 games as we continue to push for a successful title defence” said Elder Bassey.
The defeat to Rangers was Akwa United’s first defeat at home in 32 matches.
The reigning Champions have played 18 matches and have recorded seven wins, six draws, with five defeats. They are 6th on the log with 27 points, eleven points behind leaders Rivers United, who they square up against this weekend in Port Harcourt.
