AKWA UTD DOWN PLATEAU TO CROWN RIVERS UTD NPFL CHAMPIONS

David Onovo’s early strike and Leo Ezekiel’s stoppage time goal either side of Akila Jesse’s fine finish secured a crucial victory for Akwa United over Plateau United on match-day 35 – the result means Rivers United are champions of the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League with four games before the end of the season.

Plateau United went into the game ten points behind Rivers United, and needed to win to keep on the pressure but suffered a 2-1 defeat at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium to 2021 champions in a match that was watched by Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro and his assistant Acacio Dos Santos.

With Rivers United maintaining their ten points lead over Plateau United who have three games before the end of the season, the final whistle at the Nest of Champions on Saturday sparked wild jubilation in Port Harcourt as they are crowned NPFL champions.

The win which was Akwa United’s 13th of the season propelled them to 7th on the log with 51 points from 35 games and saw them extend their unbeaten home record over Plateau United to four victories and two draws in six meetings at the Nest of Champions.

The Promise Keepers will next travel to Bauchi to face Wikki Tourists on match-day 36 on Sunday 3rd July, 2022.
