With the 2019 Nigeria Professional Football League Super-Six play-offs set to kick-off in Lagos on Tuesday 4th of June, two-time Federation Cup Champions, Akwa United have intensified their preparations for the tournament by moving into closed camping in neighbouring Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The Promise Keepers arrived the Garden City on Thursday afternoon and will camp for three days, while training at the practice pitch of the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Iguwuruta-Ali.
The club’s decision to camp in Port Harcourt is to get her players more familiar with Astro turf at the Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium practice pitch as the Super-Six play-offs will be played on Astro turf at the Agege stadium in Lagos.
League’s Golden Boot winner Mfon Udoh, strike partner Ndifreke Effiong, stalwarts Cyril Olisema, Denis Nya, goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke, Togolese defender Kodjovi Dadzie and Aniefiok Godspower are in the group that left Uyo on Thursday.
Also, 2013 AFCON winner Juwon Oshaniwa, captain of the team and his assistant Otobong Effiong and Godspower Igudia are among the 25 players selected by Coach Rafael Everton for camping ahead of the play-offs.
The team will move to Lagos early next week for the play-offs which will start on Tuesday.
Akwa United secured their spot in the play-offs after finishing top of NPFL Group B log with 38 points from 22 games. They will play in a round-robin format against Kano Pillars, FC Ifeanyi Ubah, Enugu Rangers, Lobi Stars and Enyimba International at the one-week tournament.
