AKWA UTD MISS CHANCE TO GO TOP, SUFFER FIRST DEFEAT OF THE SEASON

Nigeria Professional Football League reigning Champions Akwa United missed out on the chance to move to the top of the log following a 2-0 defeat in Lafia to Nasarawa United on match-day 4.

Hoping to build on their impressive start to the new season in which they have recorded two wins and a draw, the Promise Keepers got off to an invigorating start with brilliant attacking play, creating some good scoring chances but couldn’t put them away with Ubong Friday, Ezekiel Bassey, Utibe Archibong and Seth Mayi missing their chances.

The hosts also showed signs of determination and the hunger to win but both sides couldn’t be separated at the break.

After a goalless first stanza, Michael Tochukwu put the home side ahead when he fired a low shot beyond Adewale Adeyinka in the 54th minute after being teed up by Silas Nwankwo.

The home side doubled their advantage in the 83rd minute through last season’s joint-top scorer Silas Nwankwo as Nasarawa United sealed their first league win of the season thus condemning the Promise Keepers to their first league defeat this campaign.

It was the first time this season that Akwa United failed to score and the first time they have conceded two goals in a match.

Coach Kennedy Boboye’s team needed a win in Lafia to go top, although a draw would have been enough to keep them in the top two, but the defeat means the Promise Keepers are 4th on the log with 7 points from four games.

Up next for Akwa United is another away tie against Lobi Stars on Match-day 5 in Makrudi on Sunday
