AKWA UTD TARGET FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON AS MAIKABA RETURNS

With one point from their opening two NPFL games, Akwa United will be targeting their first victory of the season when the host former champions Plateau United in a mid-week fixture at the Nest of champions.

The Promise Keepers are fresh from their moral boosting 1-1 draw with Kano Pillars on matchday 3 after suffering a shock home defeat to El-Kanemi Warriors on the opening day of the season.

The encounter will see Coach Abdu Maikaba returning to face his former team since the expiration of his contact last October after two years in charge of the Uyo based side. Defender Gabriel Wassa will also be returning to the Nest of Champions where he was fans favorites last season.

Coach Maikaba suffered a three nil defeat with Wikki Tourists the last time he sat on the away dugout at the Nest of champions during the 2016/2017 NPFL season. Coach Rafael Everton will be aiming to record his first win with his new club on Wednesday afternoon.

Speaking ahead of the mid-week clash, Coach Everton told the club’s official website www.akwaunitedfc.net that he is confident that his boys will give the fans something to cheer about.

“Wednesday’s match is an important game for us and we have to go all out for a win. We can’t afford to drop anymore points at home because this is an abridged version of the league, so if we must achieve our aim then we have to take every match very serious and ensure we pick every available points.

“We made a mistake in our first home game and lost the match, we have to give our fans and supporters something special to celebrate on Wednesday. I trust my boys that they will not let themselves and the team down, my players are ready to redeem their image and I believe in them. So we are calling on football lovers to continue to support us and we will deliver.

The Promise Keepers who sit 9th on the log with one point from two games could go level on points with their visitors with a win. Plateau United are 6th on the table with 4 points from three matches.
