Akwa United recorded their first win at the Gov Douye Diri pre-season football tournament in Yenagoa following a 1-0 win over Sunshine Stars at the Samson Siasia stadium on matchday 2.
Striker Mare Abson scored the decisive goal in the second half of the match to send the Promise Keepers to the top of Group A on four (4) points from two games following their 1-1 draw against Abia Warriors on Matchday 1.
In what was their second game in three days, head coach Muhammed Baba Ganaru made wholesale change to the starting line-up that drew with Abia Warriors and after a goalless first half, the coach made some tactical changes which paid off with one of the substitutes Mare Abson scoring the only goal of the match. In the other group A match, Bayelsa United defeated Abia Warriors 2-1. Both Bayelsa United and Sunshine Stars are on 3 points while Abia Warriors are bottom of the group with just one point.
Reacting after the game, coach Baba Ganaru congratulated his players for putting up a commanding performance and urged them to continue giving their best in subsequent matches.
A win or draw in their last group A match against hosts Bayelsa United will guarantee Akwa United a place in Sunday’s final.
