“Sunday 7th February, 2021 is a day I will not forget in my career as a footballer, when Coach (Kennedy) Boboye asked me to go and warm up, I thought it was the normal thing that coaches say to reserve players on the bench. I was shocked when the coach asked me to replace Samuel (Amadi)”
Those were the comments of Akwa United young sensation Godswill Nicholas who made his Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) debut on Match-day 9 in the Promise Keepers’ 3-0 victory over Katsina United in Uyo.
Godswill Nicholas is registered as the only youth player in Akwa United’s squad for the 2020/2021 NPFL season. The youngster was a second half substitute when he replaced winger Samuel Amadi in the 63rd minute on Sunday with Akwa United leading 2-0.
Godswill was spotted by Akwa United technical crew two seasons ago when he was playing for Cofine FC of Ikot Ekpene in the Nationwide League.
Godswill in an exclusive interview with the club’s official website www.akwaunitedfc.com disclosed;
“It was indeed a special moment for me as a footballer. I have always been dreaming of playing in the NPFL and to be honest, I wasn’t expecting it so soon but I’m grateful to God that it happened.
I’m always ready to give my all and I will continue to do my best in training while hoping for more game time.
“Last year, I was close to making my debut when we played against Kano Pillars in Kano. I was in the Match-day squad and throughout the second half I was warming up but I didn’t have the chance of playing.
“I’m really excited that it has finally come and I’m grateful to Coach Kennedy Boboye for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to play in the NPFL. I also want to appreciate all my teammates for their support and encouragement to me”.
Godswill said his target is to get more NPFL action this season and to score for the Promise Keepers. The youngster is comfortable playing anywhere upfront and also as a right-back.
