GOV DOUYE DIRI PRE-SEASON TOURNAMENT: AKWA UTD TO BATTLE KWARA UTD IN 3RD PLACE PLAYOFF

Akwa United will face Kwara United in the third place playoffs at the ongoing Gov Douye Diri pre-season football tournament after finishing second in Group A following a 1-0 defeat to hosts Bayelsa United in the last group game on Friday at the Samson Siasia stadium in Yenagoa.

Both teams finished second in their respective groups and will engage each other on Sunday at two O’clock in the afternoon (2pm) to determine the third place winner of the tournament.

The Promise Keepers made it to the playoffs after recording one win, one draw and one defeat same as Sunshine Stars who both finished on 4 points. Both teams played three games and scored and conceded the same number of goals but due to Akwa United superior head-to-head record over Sunshine Stars- a team they defeated 1-0 in their second group game, the Uyo based side secured a playoff spot.

Akwa United’s 1-0 defeat to Bayelsa United was the first match that coach Muhammed Baba Ganaru’s team had failed to score a goal at the tournament. Strikers Edidiong Ezekiel and Mare Abson were the team’s scorers in their first two matches.

Meanwhile, hosts Bayelsa United will square up against Bendel Insurance in the finals of the tournament after both teams finished as group winners.

The one week tournament will be rounded-off on Sunday with both matches taking place at the Samson Siasia stadium in Yenagoa.
