NPFL: UDOH, OROK DECLARE WAR ON ADAMAWA UTD

MFON PATRICK

Akwa United’s wait for their first win of the 2019/2020 Nigeria Professional Footbal League NPFL season may well and truly be over this weekend following the players resolve to give their best when they engage newly promoted Adamawa United in Uyo on Sunday.

The Promise Keepers are without a win in their opening six matches of the season following a run of four draws and two defeats, but some of the senior players in the team told the club’s official website www.akwaunitedfc.net that they are determined to record their first win on Sunday.

Two-time NPFL top scorer Mfon Udoh said, “we cannot continue like this, we have to start winning our games beginning from Sunday against Adamawa United. Four points from a possible 18 is a terrible way to start the season but we are mentally ready to pick all the points we need from the remaining 32 games. Come Sunday, i’m confident that there will be a turn around for us” said the striker.

Club’s Legend Akarandut Orok who rejoined the club this season expressed the hope that the Promise Keepers will take her pride of place very soon.

“I strongly believe that our (Akwa United) slow start to the season is over. We are not comfortable with our position on the log, and we are ready to fight for every available points.

“Despite our slow start, we are still within the reach of our target which is winning the NPFL title at the end of the season. We still have 32 games to play and we cannot afford to disappoint ourselves, fans and supporters. By the grace of God, we will start winning from Sunday because I can’t see how Adamawa United will escape defeat in Uyo,” optimistic Orok conclude

Coach John Obuh’s men began their campaign with a 1-1 draw in Warri against Warri Wolves. They were held to a goalless draw at home by Abia Warriors before losing 3-1 to Enyimba in Aba. The Promise Keepers then drew two successive home games against Katsina United and Nasarawa United, and lost 1-0 to Sunshine Stars in Akure last time out.

Akwa United have scored three goals and conceded six, with last season’s joint top scorer Mfon Udoh getting two against Warri Wolves and Enyimba while strike partner Ndifreke Effiong scored his first goal of the season against Nasarawa United in Uyo.

Midfielder Samuel Mathias has called on the fans to be patient while supporting the team, stressing that the team will get it right on Sunday.

“We the players have met severally and talked to ourselves about the results we have had in the last six matches, I can authoritatively say that we are united for the task ahead, just maybe our best wasn’t good enough in our previous outings but we are committed to ensure we get the desired results in our subsequent matches.

Akwa United who are currently placed 18th on the log will be facing 12th placed Adamawa United for the first time in the NPFL. The Yola based team have picked two wins, one draw and suffered three defeats so far this season.
