Reigning NPFL champions Akwa United strolled to a comfortable 2-0 win over Katsina United and improve their standing to second on the log with ten points from six games.

First half strike by defender Charles Okafor and a second half goal by captain Ubong Friday sealed a routine victory for the champions on match-day 6 at the Nest of Champions as they continue their impeccable home form with their third win of the season.

Coach Kennedy Boboye’s men began the contest on the front foot but it was Katsina United who had the first chance at goal when Faisal Sani shot on target was saved by goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka.

The Promise Keepers deservedly took the lead in the 11th through defender Charles Okafor. Ezekiel Bassey was fouled on the right flank and Seth Mayi whipped in a good free-kick, the visitors failed to clear their lines and it fell for Okafor who fired it home from outside the box.

Two minutes after the restart, the champions extended their advantage when captain Ubong Friday benefitted from a poor clearance by Katsina United backline and scored a superb goal – his third of the season, to help his team maintain their impressive home form and condemn Katsina United to their fourth defeats of the season.

Akwa United will next make a short trip to Aba to engage Enyimba International on match-day 7 on Thursday, 20th January, 2022.
