With three victories in four pre-season friendly games within a month, 2021 Nigeria Professional Football League champions Akwa United Football Club will go head-to-head with the current NPFL champions Rivers United in what many football followers describe as the battle of champions slated to take place at the Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium in Port Harcourt on Wednesday October 26,2022.
The Promise Keepers began their preparations ahead of the new football season with a 2-1 win over Katsina United in Eket before losing by the same score line to Enyimba International in Aba. Coach Ayodeji Ayeni’s boys got back to winning ways with a resounding 2-0 victory over Enugu Rangers in Eket and followed it up with a 2-1 win over Abia Warriors in Uyo last weekend.
Coach Ayeni is poised to try out different tactics and formations with the players that will be selected to represent the club in the much anticipated game in line with his philosophy geared towards playing beautiful free-flowing football.
Hosts Rivers United, who suffered a heavy defeat in the second preliminary round of their CAF Champions League game against Wydada Casablanca of Morocco will be aiming to use the Grade-A friendly against Akwa United to fine tune their preparation for their CAF Confederation Cup third and final preliminary round game against El Nasr Benghazi of Libya.
In the last four meetings between Rivers United and Akwa United in the NPFL, both teams have enjoyed one win and one draw apiece. Kickoff is scheduled for four O’clock in the afternoon (4pm).
