Race for the NPFL title still open – Maikaba

Akwa United Technical Adviser Abdu Maikaba has declared that the race for the NPFL title is still open for all serious contending clubs.

Lobi Stars of Makrudi have been on top of the NPFL table for much of the first round but they are hotly chase by Kano Pillars, last season’s champions Plateau United and last year’s Aiteo Cup Champions Akwa United.

Akwa United is one of the best rated teams in the NPFL and is considered as top contenders for this year’s league title.

Maikaba who is in his second season with the Promise Keepers believes that his team has good quality players and a realistic chance to win the league diadem at the end of the season.

“League football anywhere around the world is a marathon and never a sprint race. Different teams have topped the table this season and that is an indication that if a team is consistent in performance it can top the table. What matters most is which team will be top of the table after Matchday 38.

“We still have many matches to play before the end of the season. We need to stay focus and be committed to the task ahead. We are optimistic of getting good results both at home and away that is why I say that the league title is still very open for all contending teams. We must fight to get our hands on it at the end of the season, that has always been our target”.

Maikaba who doubles as the assistant coach of the national U-20 team The Flying Eagles, won the Aiteo FA Cup in his first season with Akwa United and is on course to lift the league title for the Uyo based club.
