TOCHUKWU MICHAEL BREAKS AKWA UNITED’S HEART IN LAGOS

Akwa United surrendered all three points to Sporting Lagos, losing 2-1 at the Onikan Stadium in Lagos on matchday 22 of the Nigeria Premier Football League season.

Following back-to-back defeats to Enugu Rangers and Bayelsa United all by a single goal, the Promise Keepers were desperate for maximum points in Lagos. Despite their dominant display in the first half, they could not find the breakthrough.

Five minutes into the second half, mid-season signing Suleiman Sani opened his goal account for Akwa United with a wonderful individual goal that gave the 2021 champions the lead.

The home side fought back and got their reward in the 83rd minute through Tochukwu Michael who fired in a good free-kick from outside the area. The forward completed his brace in the 89th minute when he benefited from a defensive mistake by Chukuwebuka Anthony to score the winning goal for his team.

With the result, Akwa United remain 18th on the log with 21 points from 22 games comprising 5 wins, 6 draws and eleven defeats.

The 2021 champions will next engage Enyimba of Aba at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium Nest of Champions on Monday 4 March 2024.
