BASSEY CHARGES AKWA UNITED TO WORK ON PORT HARCOURT LAPSES

MFON PATRICK

Despite playing a “credible” three draws and one victory at the Governor Wike invitational tournament, the Chairman of the Club has considered it not good enough.

“I was told you played good football, especially against Lobi Stars and
Rivers United, but in a situation where you come out empty handed, then all your efforts come to nought.”

Addressing the players after their training session on Monday, Elder Paul Bassey said ” football is about goals. No matter how well you play, no matter the percentage of your possession, if you do not score goals, then you have not done well”

He charged the Technical Crew and the players to take advantage of the
Port Harcourt outing to fine tune the team in preparation for the commencement of the league next season.

In a technical meeting held earlier to appraise the team’s performance in Port Harcourt, Akwa United head Coach Kennedy Boboye said he will address all lapses observed in his team during the pre-season tournament before the start of the 2020/2021 NPFL season.

Boboye admitted that the Promise Keepers’ elimination in the group stage of the competition was as a result of flaws in some departments in the team and promised to give it adequate attention in the final
phase of preparations before the commencement of the new season.

“We went to Port Harcourt to test run our team ahead of the new season. After four matches we observed deficiencies in some
department of the team and we are happy that we participated in that tournament. Those noticeable lapses will really help us to make necessary corrections in those departments before the start of the
season.

“There were lots of positives for us after playing four games in six days. We played four matches, won one, drew three, scored six goals and conceded four. What we experienced in that preseason tournament
are situations that may likely resurface in the new season and we are grateful that we are seeing it now and we will do our best to correct those mistakes and present a formidable team in time for the new
season.

He thanked the Club Chairman for making it possible for the team to honour the pre-season despite tight economic atmosphere.
