James Ajako’s 82nd minute strike secured a vital win for 2021 Nigeria Professional Football League champions, Akwa United over Plateau United on Matchday 4 at the new Eket Stadium.
The left-back who scored his first goal of the season on Matchday 3 against Nasarawa United in Jos, continued his fine form on Sunday when his left-footed volley sailed into the bottom-right corner of the post, leaving Plateau United goalkeeper Anozie Chinedu helpless.

Ajako in an exclusive interview with the club’s official website www.akwaunitedfc.com said ” I’m grateful to God for today’s victory. It was a tough game and I’m delighted that my efforts earned us this win. It was a match we needed to win and I’m happy that we gave it our all”
“Scoring again really gives me joy and I will continue to work hard to ensure I score more goals and help this team to achieve success this season”.
Assessing his team’s performance, coach Ayodeji Ayeni congratulated his players for their determination and fighting spirit and revealed that they will continue to build on the foundation of their recent successes.
“I want to congratulate my players for fighting till the very end. The goal came at a crucial moment and I want to give it to my boys for their resilience and determination in today’s game. The win came because my players resolved to win.
“We played against a good side. They came with a game plan but we were more determined to win. The level of commitment in the team is encouraging and we hope to continue building on our recent results.
“This match is done and dusted, our attention is now on Matchday 5 in Ibadan against Kwara United and we must do the best we can to ensure we get a positive result in midweek”.
