Akwa United’s quest for a first away win in the 2023-24 Nigeria Premier Football League season will be rekindled on Sunday when they take on Enugu Rangers on matchday 20 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium.
The Promise Keepers defeated Enugu Rangers 1-0 in the first installment of the match at Eket Stadium before the league embarked on a mid-season break.
The 2021 champions have accumulated 21 points from 19 first-round matches comprising 5 victories, six draws with 8 loses. They have scored 16 and conceded 19 goals and are 16th on the log.
In their 9 away matches played in the first-round, Akwa United managed just one draw, a goalless draw against Bendel Insurance. They however scored six goals away from home and they will be hoping to improve their scoring form on the road as they aim for a positive result in Enugu on Sunday.
Both clubs have met 23 times in the past with Enugu Rangers recording 9 victories, Akwa United picked up 5 wins while 9 of those matches ended in draws. Akwa United will hope to record another victory at Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium as they did in 2020 season.
The coaching crew have fortified the squad with some quality players during the mid-season transfer window. The players include; former captain Ubong Friday, Mustapha Dan-Azumi from Gombe United, Suleiman Sani from Wikki Tourists, Daniel Japhet from EFCC, Damilare Shodipo from Stormers FC amongst others.
Akwa United spent the first stanza of the season in the bottom half of the table and have resolved to make upward movement into the top half of the log in the second round.
Caretaker coach Umar Abdullahi has expressed optimism that the team has good quality players that will help improve the club’s performance as they aim to end the season on a strong footing.
