Following their impressive start to the 2021/2022 football league season, Captain of Akwa United, Ubong Friday says he and his teammates have resolved to maintain the winning mentality in all their matches as they aim to retain their NPFL title.

The defending Champions began the defense of their crown with a resounding 3-0 win over Kano Pillars in Uyo on Sunday and Friday who scored one of the goals on match-day 1 revealed that the Promise Keepers are in Ibadan for a serious business.

Akwa United will be guests to newly promoted Shooting Stars Sport Club on match-day 2 Boxing-day fixture at the Lekan Salami Stadium on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to the club’s official website www.akwaunitedfc.com, Friday said:

“There is a positive atmosphere in our camp and we are fully motivated to go for victory in all our matches this season irrespective of where we play.

“We had a wonderful start to the season on match-day 1 and we want to keep up with that tempo in all our matches this season.

“The match on Sunday against Shooting Stars is a key game. It’s their first home match since their return to the NPFL. Shooting Stars is a well known club with lots of football history but we are in Ibadan for a very serious business, our mission is to challenge for all three points on Sunday. As defending Champions, our target is to ensure we win games home and away so we can retain our title”.

Ubong Friday who is Akwa United’s most decorated player having won an NPFL title, two FA Cups and a Super Cup title, observed that there was massive improvement in the league last season and added that the 2021/2022 season may yet be the best.
