Head Coach of Akwa United John Obuh says he is confident that the quality of players at his disposal will make his team stand out this season, as the much anticipated battle for 2019/2020 NPFL title begin this weekend.

Akwa United who ended last season in fourth position, will engage NPFL returnee Warri Wolves on matchday 1 at Warri township stadium.

Coach Obuh who was recently unveiled alongside his Deputy Duke Udi and 15 new players are in high spirit to hit the ground running as they target a positive result in Warri.

“At last, the long awaited season is finally here and it will be a long campaign for all the clubs but we are ready to take it one game at a time.

“Our concentration is on matchday 1 fixture against Warri Wolves. Many people are saying that we are the favourites but we all know that football is not played on paper, so we have to work hard to ensure we achieve our aim.

Accessing the quality of players in his team, Coach Obuh revealed that his squad is full of talented players with the needed experience to make a mark in the league.

“We have a moderate squad of 35 quality and talented players who are determined and ready to give their best at any given time. We have worked closely with the boys throughout the pre-seasons and I can say that the technical crew is satisfied with the level of commitment and dedication in the team.

” We are no strangers to the tough and difficult nature of the NPFL, but I believe that my players have the needed experience to surmount any challenge because they have played at the highest level of club football in Nigeria. All I can say is that, we are ready for this campaign” Said coach Obuh.

In what will be his first competitive match in-charge of Akwa United, Coach John Obuh has selected 18 players including last season’s joint top scorer Mfon Udoh, and ten of the newly signed players for the Matchday one game in Warri.

The Uyo based side are without a win in their last four meetings with Warri Wolves in the league but the hosts will come up against a completely different Akwa United side, who won three and drawn four of their twelve away games in last season’s abridge league.

The Promise Keepers will be aiming to continue their impressive away form this weekend when they square up against Wolves on Sunday.
