Uche Collins’ second-half strike earned Akwa United a 1-0 win over Rivers United and helped them secure a place in the semi final at the maiden edition of the Naija Super 8 tournament.
The win over Rivers United was the Promise Keepers’ second victory in two games at the tournament after their 2-1 Victory Yobe Stars in their opening group B fixture at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
Uche Collins who was voted Hero of the Match by the organizers of the competition, out-muscled his marker in the 57th minute before calmly slotting the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Abiodun Akande to guarantee his team’s success following a spectacular second-half performance to win what was a south-south derby.
Coach Fatai Osho’s team stay top of group B table on six points, followed by Lobi Stars who are on four points. Yobe Stars have one point while Rivers United are without a point after two rounds of matches.
Akwa United who entered the tournament as a wild card team will face Lobi Stars on Wednesday in their last group B game that will determine the leadership of the group and they will know their semi final opponent after the last round of matches group A on Thursday.
